DORKBOT: TODD BLAIR FUNDRAISER
http://dorkbot.org/dorkbotsf

It's dorkbot time again. However, this is a very special dorkbot where 100% of the proceeds will go directly to support our friend and long-time dorkbot supporter, Todd Blair. Todd a 15+ year veteran of SRL as well as collaborator with Tim North, Chico McMurtrie, Lynn Hershman, and countless other visionaries, suffered serious head trauma in an unfortunate accident in Amsterdam after the recent SRL performance there for Robodock. He remains in a coma and his injuries are severe. Due to the generous donations of Kyle Minor, Eric Paulos, dorkbotSF, many SRL members, and our speakers, we are able to pass on all of the proceeds from this dorkbot to the family of Todd Blair for his recovery efforts which are expected to be quite substantial.

Please join us in celebrating Todd's recovery in this special dorkbotSF event.
He's also making a poster for this but for now here are some images evocative of what the theme is shaping up to be:

watch the SRL site for more info on when/where we'll be showing video from last year's ghostly scenes show. it's an amazing edit where the audience is immersed within a 16 channel audio recording, putting them into the middle of the performance, while 10 10” screens surround them with a multi-camera, multi-screen edited video. By far the most accurate reproduction of an SRL show, as well as an experience impossible to have live.

the other ISEA

some of the SRL crew are doing other things for the festival besides the SRL show... for those attending there's also Eric Paulos' Interactive City Summit starting next monday:

Interactive City Summit 2006
ISEA2006

7-8 August 2006
Swedish American Hall
San Francisco, CA

http://www.urban-atmospheres.net/ICSummit2006/

The event is free and open to the public. Registration is required.

The Interactive City Summit is centered around a series of open forum
debates, situation room lunches, public votes, and open microphone
sessions. Initiating this discussion will be a series of provocative
voices challenging us to re-think our beliefs and expectations of the
emerging Interactive City:

Malcolm McCullough (University of Michigan)
http://www-personal.umich.edu/~mmmc/

Matt Jones (Nokia Design)
http://www.blackbeltjones.com/

ReBar
http://www.rebargroup.org/

Mirjam Struppek (Urban Screens)
http://culturebase.org/home/struppek/HomepageEnglisch/Contact.htm

Trokia
http://www.troika.uk.com/

In addition, we want you to inspire us. During registration,
individuals and groups from all facets of the community are invited
to propose their own rapid fire vision presentation for the Summit.

Be a part of the inception of a new vision on urban life -- attend,
contribute, and have a voice.

This summit is held in conjunction with ISEA2006 and its Interactive
City theme with the results of the summit being featured at the ISEA
Symposium on 11 August.

machine hanging from the ceiling

we're about ready to load out for san jose so the shop is like a rubik's cube of machines swapping them in and out. so there's more space now to notice things. this is probably the worst place to be in an earthquake as the ceiling is packed with heavy things that might fall:

there's Jaws http://srl.org/shows/sanjose/pre-show/aug1/jaws.jpg
last used in the 80s i think for filming Bitter Message of Hopeless Grief. it used to have 2 clear orbs where eyes would be if you were to anthropomorphize this thing and inside the orbs were dead animals like eyeballs spinning around inside.

then there's also the stu bot: http://srl.org/shows/sanjose/pre-show/aug1/stubot.jpg
which is the only animal-operated machine at the shop. it was driven by Stu, Mark's dead guinea pig

i'm taking random photos of machines like this that wont be part of the show as they are uncovered and also some crew silliness and posting them to the pre-show photo blog: http://srl.org/shows/sanjose/pre-show/blog/ if people want to take a look...

Need volunteers for upcoming show?

I'd like to volunteer to help out with the upcoming San Jose show. I did some work for the 1998 What is Real show, helping out a bit around the shop in the weeks beforehand and then setting up under the highway. During the show I was a back-watcher for one of the camera men out on the stage.

My time in the coming weeks is a bit tight now. My wife and I just had a baby girl (we named her Tesla) (in fact my wife was in the middle of labor during the July 4 party at SRL HQ; we could hear all the mayhem from our house on Potrero Hill).

I still might be able to help out for a few hours here and there however. On the day of the show I could show up as early as mid afternoon to help set up.

I'm a software engineer professionaly, but I'm happy to do any sort of manual labor.

OMG!!! THEY CHANGED THE START TIME OF THE POWER TOOL DRAG RACES!!!

OMG!!! They changed the Start time Of THE POWER TOOL DRAG RACES. It's a good thing REDNECKS get up EARLY and stuff.....

Okay Racers, it's that time again.

Congratulations on having the good taste to once more subject
yourselves to personal injury, potential humilation, public intoxication and severe
sunburn.

Oh yeah and the drive to succeed and be the best racer you can be all
that yadda yadda.

You are receiving this because YOU are one of the LUCKY FEW who will be
racing at the Power Tool Drag Races This Sunday, May 7th. Yes, it really is
this sunday, yes, this sunday is the 7th, I'll give you a minute to check
your calendars. . .

Okay, we good? Excellent.

Here are a few thing you need to know (pay attention, our options have
changed):

BECAUSE we have gotten such a stunning turnout for the races this year,
and BECAUSE due to extreme laziness on the part of the organizers we're
only having one day of racing, We would ask ALL BUILDERS to be ON SITE at

9:30am

Yes my friends you read me right, racers muct be AT THE JUNKYARD AT

9:30am.

If you don't have at least a representative group of your team there
with the machines, you will definitely make the baby Jesus cry, and worse, send
Bill the Junkman into an awful sulk.

This is so we can at least make a feeble attempt to get through all the
races. It'll be close and we'll probably end in the dark, but wonder of
wonders, we'll have light for a change, plus someone somewhere will probably find something to burn.

Ideally, we will begin racing a little after ten am, so we'll be
underway by the time we have an audience at noonish, maybe earlier. YES, the track will be set
up and good to go. Thanks Charlie and his crew for that, yay Charlie.

"But Gal Friday!" you say "How'm I supposed to get in from Sacramento
in time for 9am?" Well my frends, we can certainly make arrangement sof some
kind. I have couches. Let us know if it's a huge issue and we can work
something out so's you get there with time to spare, Glory Hallelujah.

Nom there will be no formal TV there this year. We are lean, mean, punk
rock and Sponsored by Delicious Delicious Lagunitas Beer so make sure to
intoxicate yourself well before operating your machinery.

Our Race Offical this year is once more Dave "Judge Dave" Calkins, who
will also be on the big PA telling you when to get your collective kiesters to
the starting line/staging area (did I mention we will in all likelihood
have a formal staging area? Thank Don for that. Yay Don.). He will be also
running the ladders and maintaining the all-important illusion of
professionalism. He can be bought with Pepperidge Farm and offers of massage.

John Hell and Hal Robins round out our announcing roster this year,
with a few potential alternates to sub in. If you know any hardcore gearheads of the female persuasion who can rock the mike, send 'em our way.

We will have pit tables and more electricity than you can shake a
capacitor at.

We will have pit bosses to show you where to go with what.

If you know someone who is fully planning on competing and they are not
on this list, TELL THEM TO REGISTER. Seriously, this is your main source of
information, the email you supply through the registration page. Send
'em to the website (http://www.buildersdb.com), it takes five minutes and will
result in Simone failing to have her traditional moments of despair under the
counter in the junkyard office. This means less yelling for *YOU!*. We love
that when that happens.

So, direct any questions you nearly invariably have to me, Simone, and
I will send em along to the right person. Should you wish to do some
preemptive abuse of the judges, please contact Dave. Should you wish to whine about the earliness of the hour, please contact Charlie. All abuse can be
directed to me, where I shall keep a careful note of your needs and then
immediately forget to bring that particular clipboard on the day.

Thanks a ton, remind me of all the things I forgot. See you at the
races!

Simone
--
Bringing you quality product in the face of crushing indifference.

SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY It's RACING RACING RACING!!

Miss Mary Jane had a BAD crash in testing yesterday. I bent the frame and the front (Tires?). So I had to change it from 4WD to just 2WD but she still runs pretty good. I might have to stop by the Box Shop on Friday morning or so to grind a little and run a bead or two and change a gear ratio for a new motor I just installed. Hopefully someone will be there....

I comming down early on Friday to help you guys out with the track and whatever.

Matt and I mounted some new Gocart RACING tires on the Funny Car The (MATT DAWG EXSPRESS) on Saturday.

Of course we had to break them in and wear off the (high spots). HE HE...

So we strapped it to my (Toyota truck with (it's tires) chocked up real good) and did a 6 minute burn out.

Boy, the New tires get real gummy when hot and they plastered the tailgate of my Truck with Super Gooey Black Chunks of Melted Rubber Happiness.

Of course, I'm not going to clean it off and Stuff.

It kinda looks like a Rabbit had a problem with (exsplosive diarrhea)

Poor little Bunny..... ;)

Six days until RACING RACING RACING at the Junkyard.

Greese up your Tools and Register (you bunch of wanabees).....

Can you high tech POWER TOOL RACERS actually beat a (Berkeley Hippy Chick with a belt sander (with an awesome paint job)) in a semi fair race?

I'll bet you can't, so there and Stuff...

Well heres you chance to prove it....

http://www.powertooldragraces.com/

http://www.buildersdb.com/view_bots.asp?eventid=186

Actually I'm a little worried myself... Some of them Berkeley folks are really fast.. They have been running from The MAN for years and stuff...

Bring it ON...

Build Safe...

Build Mean...

Build Strong...

SRL at Fringe Exhibitions
Exhibition Dates: January 21 - February 25, 2006

Opening Reception: Saturday, January 21, from 6 - 8 PM
504 chung king court,
los angeles 90012
213 613 0160

For its inaugural exhibition Fringe Exhibitions is pleased to present the work of Mark Pauline, director of Survival Research Laboratories (SRL).

This exhibition will feature the newest addition to the SRL machine family- the Sneaky Soldiers- near life sized, remote controlled army of revolutionaries. Also included in the exhibition will be large-scale documentary images, and the premier of the video from SRL's recent show in Downtown Los Angeles. This video features the first invasion of the Sneaky Soldiers. The SRL commentary on the art of war debued a Sneaky Soldier emerging from an 18-foot tall wooden Trojan horse to face danger from large-scale destructive robots enduring the pain of flame and damage through a hail of sparks and projectiles. After the fog of war was lifted from the field of battle revealing mangled wrecks of machinery, the Sneaky Soldiers were gathered to be repaired to fight again another day. Similar to a real theater of war where battle takes place, these machines and props engage in a struggle for survival. Both the machines and operators expend intense energy creating an atmosphere of immediacy and choreographed chaos. Each of the eight soldiers has an individual number and distinct battle wounds from the performance. The Sneaky Soldier has been a recurring character in many SRL performances. The new Sneaky Soldier is a major technological improvement with a steel torso enclosing a battery powered, chain driven mechanism to create a crawling action.

SRL engages new vocabularies by integrating machines, theatrical sets and props, with dramatic, visual metaphors bringing to life, large-scale mechanical performances for audiences that rival other popular culture events. By taking things to extreme ends, SRL attempts to create new levels of sensory and emotional intensity. Using diverse disciplines such as performance, literature, and engineering, in concert with artistic expression, ideas are transformed into visceral experiences. Employing technology to the fullest and breaking new ground by trying to build collaboration between art and electronic culture, the creative work of SRL is constantly evolving as advances in new technologies are being developed. We are just beginning to scratch the surface on understanding the potential of technology and its relationship to contemporary art. With the assimilation of machine to technology, cultural transformations take place. The evolution of electronic culture is a change in the dynamics of society, representation and experience.

Survival Research Laboratories was conceived and founded by Mark Pauline in 1978 as an organization of creative technicians dedicated to redirecting the techniques, tools, and tenets of industry, science, and the military away from their typical manifestations in practicality, product, or warfare. SRL has staged over 50 mechanized presentations in the United States, Europe, and Japan that consist of a unique set of ritualized interactions between machines, robots, and special effects devices, employed in developing themes of socio-political satire. Since its inception SRL has operated as a not for profit organization producing its own live mechanical performances.
My two big interests are making futristic weapons and high-tech surveillence equipment. I have the later covered, but am looking for links to used military and industrial technology for home-security applications. (microwave area-denial, pain-field generators etc.) Any links would be appreciated.

fallen battlebot brother

I didn't know the guy but I thought this might be of some interest here.

http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/news/11936773.htm

Robot whiz dies in scuffle

A Miami man known for driving the robot ''Rammstein'' on the popular Comedy Central show BattleBots died during a street fight in Davie Sunday, police said.

BY KEVIN DEUTSCH
kdeutsch@herald.com
AND ROBERT STEINBACK

Julio Cesar Roqueta lived fast.

The 24-year-old Miami resident loved going to clubs and parties. He always preferred swift cars to slow ones. And if someone wanted a fight, he was never one to back down.

But as Roqueta and two friends prepared to leave the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino early Sunday morning after a night of partying, someone picked a fight that ended with Roqueta being punched so hard he fell into an oncoming car on U.S. 441, killing him instantly.

''He wanted to do so many things in life, and I guess that's why he lived so fast, because he knew the end was coming,'' said Roqueta's sister, Anabel Rodriguez, 32. ``He liked to pretend he was tough. He had a very short temper.''

Roqueta also was a technical whiz who was largely self-taught. In 2000, he and some friends competed on the popular Comedy Central show BattleBots, which featured remote-controlled robots battling each other. Roqueta was the driver of their creation, which the team called Rammstein.

Roqueta attended Miami Coral Park Senior High, where he developed a love of robotics and mechanics with the help of a science-advocacy program.

Roqueta ''had a loud mouth, but he was a great guy with a huge heart,'' according to one of his friends, Alejandro Espinosa. ``Everybody who knew him loved him.''

The fight that led to Roqueta's death started tamely enough.

Roqueta and two friends from his BattleBot team -- Espinosa and Dennis Moreno -- spent much of Saturday evening and early Sunday at the Seminole Hard Rock. The group left shortly after 4 a.m. and returned to the parking lot where they prepared to leave in Moreno's souped-up Dodge Neon, Espinosa said Sunday.

In the parking lot, three or four people in a black Mercedes began ridiculing the Neon, and an exchange of trash-talking ensued, Espinosa said.

The car was an older model, but it had a specialized exhaust system, typically reserved for faster, newer cars.

''It was just teasing name-calling,'' Espinosa, 25, said. ''Just talk. We get into this sort of stuff all the time. It wasn't anything out of the ordinary.'' The other people were strangers, he said.

Roqueta got into a shouting match with one of the man, but no punches were thrown. It looked like a fight would be avoided.

Moreno, Roqueta and Espinosa left, turning northbound on 441. They were stopped by a red light at Griffin Road. The Mercedes also stopped. The trash-talking resumed, and apparently escalated. Someone got out of the Mercedes and came around to the passenger side of the Neon, where Roqueta was sitting in the front seat. Roqueta got out.

LANDED A PUNCH

Fists began to fly, police said. One of the men from the Mercedes cocked back, swung, and landed a punch on Roqueta's face, sending him stumbling backward, police said.

Roqueta fell down, his head hitting the bumper of a car headed northbound on U.S. 441, police said. The sound of the crash was so piercing, someone called 911 and reported it as a gunshot. When police arrived, they realized Roqueta had suffered a violent death, but not from a bullet.

''This kid hit [Roqueta] right in the mouth,'' said Davie Police Lt. Bill Bamford. ``He lost his balance, fell backwards, and the car hit him in the headlight area. It was just bad timing.''

After the accident, Roqueta's friends and the other men drove away from the scene, leaving his body behind, police said.

Espinosa said everyone left but all later returned.

The man who punched Roqueta, whose name was not released, came to a Davie police station later on Sunday and told police what happened. He had not been charged as of Sunday night.

Police also interviewed the other men involved. Davie police said they hope to track down the driver whose car slammed into Roqueta, Bamford said.

Rodriguez says she does not blame anyone for what happened to her brother. ''Whether that kid who punched him is guilty or not, it's not going to bring my brother back,'' she said.

Espinosa said he and Roqueta were both born in Cuba and their families remained close after coming to Miami. Roqueta's family arrived when he was 8, his sister Anabel Rodriguez said.

Aside from their BattleBot competition, the two also worked to design a propulsion system they hoped would be included on aerospace engineer Burt Rutan's SpaceShipOne, which became the first privately funded space vehicle last September. Although their design wasn't used, the pair built a full-scale mock-up of the engine -- with 15,000 pounds of thrust -- and tested it in California's Mojave Desert, Espinosa said.

''He's just as smart as anybody,'' he said of Roqueta. ``Whatever he wanted to do, he did it. He basically taught himself how to weld.

''We talked about opening up a fabrication shop, or a custom motorcycle shop,'' Espinosa said.

ALWAYS JOKING

When Roqueta was with his family, he was constantly joking, trying to make them smile, his sister said.

On Saturday, Roqueta had spent hours playing with one of his nieces.

''He held her in his arms. ... He was so loving,'' said Rodriguez, as she began to cry. ``I don't know how I'm going to tell my girls he's gone.''

Anyone with information is urged to call Davie police at 954-693-8200 or Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-8477.

Hey folks, I am seriously considering moving to the Palm Springs area and I was wondering if anyone knows of any underground arts scene in that area. Is there an underground arts scene around there or am I gonna have to be making trips to LA?

need some advise w/hydrogen foam fire sculpture

For a fire sculpture at Burning Man 05, I plan on bubbling hydrogen through a soapy solution that will (I hope) produce a lighter than air foam which will drift up into the sky where it will be ignited. But foam is very weak and I need something like surveyors tape (something very lightweight) that can be unwound in the foam that will burn and carry the flame the entire length of the foam snake (I’m afraid the wind will break up my foam into several sections and then the flame will not go the entire length. This needs to be able to burn if wetted by the soapy foam. I'm also on the lookout for cheap/free chemicals that can be added to the foam, which will produce bright colors when burned.
Would you or anyone you know, have any ideas? Please & Thank You!
also, i dont know how mark does it, but he spends *a lot* of money on these shows and does not get paid for it. aside from SRL itself, this is another thing that sets him apart from other artists. he doesn't whine about not getting grants or being at the mercy of 'the man', he just does his thing on his own terms. that's pretty cool -keeps him 'uninfluencable'

I was at the richmond dump today and was amazed at the number of seagulls. They use a small shock wave cannon to scare them off, but this seems to not work well.
I talked to a supervisor about the Shockwave cannon we have and he seemed pretty exited about it. It might be a good place to do some comunity service and dial in the cannon at the same time.

Dear everyone,
(This is forwarded to you):

Today Scott Calvert, SO of Ann Goldberg., who is to take care of my
BMW75/6-Sputnik sidecar, sent me an emergency letter stating that the
sidecar went missing. It was parked in Oakland, between 3rd Avenue and
19th.

I am in New Mexico, and cannot be back in California until January.

We have since checked with both the police and the tow, and neither
confirmed that they have the sidecar in their records. That means it is
stolen.

Most of you know this is my teaching vehicle, and I put almost a year to
make this vehicle happens. I am supposed to bring this vehicle back to
New Mexico in either this month, or January.

The vehicle in question is white, with the sidecar being red (a
sputnik). Its vehicle license plate number is 7M0563 (0=zero). Its vin #
4947155

The picture is here:

http://www.alcatrazmoto.com/rigs/bmwsputnik.jpg

Please spread this email out as far as possible, and also to all
(including Bay Area riders) forums, so that it could be found before it
was disassembled or shipped to Mexico. Please notfy all local groups such
as the Vampires, the Rats, Dragons, etc, to look out for it. Feel free to
do whatever you want to do with the thieves. I just need the vehicle
back.

Notice that since this is a sidecar, if the person stole it for joyride
may not know how to operate and can kill himself very easily. For those
that knows sidecar, its steering method is the exact opposite of a
motorcycle. A sidecar, like a trike, is traditioanlly used by handicapped
person, so stealing a sidecar is really a very disgusting act. This is a
school vehicle, and my students are usually handicapped.

Your help is appreciated,

Vince

Wasn't the rocket car with no moving parts (engine) that was at Burning Man in '94-'95 built by someone SRL affiliated? It was an awesome piece of work that has left memories for me that will last a lifetime.

From my understanding, the chest-crushing explosion that occurred in the chamber that propelled the car was precisely acoustically tuned to regenerate itself resulting in a continuous stream of these explosions (so long as there was fuel to ignite).

Does anyone know what happened to the car - or the technology?

The City of Oakland seeks review panelists on an on-going basis to serve on
Public Art Selection Panels for artists commissioned to create public art
through Measure DD. A process established by the City's Percent for Art
Ordinance requires artists and arts professionals to serve as voting members
in the selection of public artists and artworks. The names of potential
panelists must be approved by the City's Public Art Advisory Committee and
the Cultural Affairs Commission. Panelists from the approved list will be
contacted as needed to participate on selection panels for current projects.
The Cultural Arts & Marketing Department is looking for artists and art
professionals with a wide range of interests who would enjoy being part of
the process of selecting and commissioning Oakland's public art.

land/water quality and expanding recreational facilities and opportunities
for Oakland citizens. The bond will generate approximately $2.8 million for
public art projects related to Measure DD.
The film never explaines why there is a GIANT statue holding a sword takeing up most of the useable payload area in the rocket.

10 Years of Robotic Mayhem on DVD

A Cruel and Rebellious Plot to
Pervert the Minds of Viewers to Unholy Uses

By Gary Morris

One of the early lessons museum visitors learn, from parents, teachers, and underpaid guards, is: "Don't touch the art!" The reasons for this vary from commercial considerations (imagine sticky fingers on a Rembrandt) to reinforcing middlebrow notions of quality and taste, but the result is typically a rigid respect, even reverence, for the "art object" that keeps the experience passive and bloodless. The only mainstream institutions that encourage "disrespecting" the art by interacting with it are children's museums, which are also, significantly, popular with adults. It's no surprise that "experiencing" art, as opposed to cringing before it, must be ghettoized in a children's play space, as if too much engagement is a sign of immaturity.

Of course, some adults want more than giant sandboxes and lever-based zoology tests. Fortunately, the more extreme realms of performance art from the last quarter of the last century address this need, providing new and shocking aesthetic thrills. Founded in 1978 by Mark Pauline, San Francisco's Survival Research Laboratories has been a leading force in this area. SRL creates complex tableaux vivant "starring" hand-created robotic forms and dead animal parts that enact ritualized melodramas of destruction. These dramas, a kind of mechanized Grand Guignol, usually end in an apocalyptic crash, with fur, flesh, metal, and fire exploding across the stage or the street. SRL's work is visionary: their grafting of the organic with the mechanical paved the way for films like Robocop, Terminator, and The Matrix series, and phenomena like Junkyard Wars and Monster Garage that smear the lines between human beings and machines.
jon reiss srl video on dvd

http://www.parasiteproductions.com/roboticmayhem/

Before "Battle Bots", "The Matrix", "The Terminator" or any of their imitators, there was Survival Research Laboratories. Founded by the visionary Mark Pauline in 1978, SRL utilizes incredibly complex props and robotics to create a unique spectacle unlike anything seen before. In this DVD collection Jon Reiss encapsulates the humor, terror, artistic bravado and technical genius behind the menacing machines and eaves it into a gloriously cacophonous whole.

Since its inception SRL has operated as an organization of creative technicians dedicated to re-directing the techniques, tools, and tenets of industry, science, and the military away from their typical manifestations in practicality, product or warfare. Since 1979, SRL has staged over 45 mechanized presentations in the United States and Europe. Each performance consists of a unique set of ritualized interactions between machines, robots, and special effects devices, employed in developing themes of socio-political satire. Humans are present only as audience or operators.

From acclaimed Director Jon Reiss, whose works include Better Living Through Circuitry and Nine Inch Nails Happiness In Slavery video, this DVD shows the development of SRL from it's earliest performances in front of a handful of people in San Francisco to grand spectacles staged for thousands in the U.S. and Europe. It also features special editions of SRL Documentaries, biographies, interviews and photos and the World Premiere of the Delusions Of Expediency.

Anyone know of any really good shows in the Bay Area this Saturday? I'm kinda tempted to see Jewdriver and Veronica Lipgloss at the Slaughterhouse but I'm not a HUGE fan of either (though they are fun). Any recommendations of good shows or other fun/weird (non dance) events happening?

CALL FOR FIRE & LIGHT ARTISTS, PERFORMERS, AND INSTRUCTORS

Burning Man and The Crucible present: the 2004 Fire Arts Festival
Wednesday through Sunday, July 7-11, 2004

An art exposition celebrating and showcasing innovative works of art incorporating fire and/or light, with workshops, lectures, installations, and performances.

We invite you to submit your work/performance for inclusion in our 2004 Fire Arts Festival.

The Fire Arts Festival will take place July 7-11 at The Crucible’s 48,000 square foot industrial arts facility and nearby 200,000 square foot outdoor space in West Oakland, dubbed the Fire Arts Arena. There will be a full program of arts and educational events throughout the five days and nights, including classes, lectures, workshops and demonstrations. The highlight of the festival will be the many fire performances and fire and light sculptures featured both inside The Crucible and outside at the Fire Arts Arena on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.

The Crucible (www.thecrucible.org) is a non-profit arts education center that fosters a collaboration of arts, industry and community, teaching and showcasing fire, metal, glass and light art in the East Bay for over five years. The Crucible offers over 400 classes to over 3,000 students every year in everything from bronze casting to neon, welding to glass working, blacksmithing to fire dancing. Dedicated to the creative use of fire and light, The Crucible is known for its innovative and stunning public events and fundraisers, uniting artists from a diverse collection of disciplines.

Burning Man (www.burningman.com) has encouraged and presented work by fire artists and performers from around the world. From its early days on Baker Beach in San Francisco through its evolution into the organizing body behind a bustling temporary art metropolis of 30,000 in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada, the Burning Man Project and community has supported and encouraged the arts – and the fire arts, in particular. Burning Man is dedicated to supporting, encouraging and raising global awareness for this unique medium and the groundbreaking artists that work with fire and light.

This year we are joining forces to jointly present this event, with sponsorship from the City of Oakland and The Oakland Museum of California, and with support from The Oakland Fire & Police Departments. Together we'd like to invite you, as a practicing artist, a performer using fire or light, or an instructor to get in touch and tell us how you might like to participate.

The mission of the Fire Arts Festival is to:

* Showcase and celebrate innovative fire and light artists, and to feature fire and light as exciting and diverse mediums for self-expression
* Give artists working with fire and light dedicated space and resources to share their work with new audiences
* Expose event producers, art collectors, museum and gallery curators, families and the broader Bay Area public to a full range of fire and light artists and to encourage greater funding for art and performance of this genre
*Offer unique learning opportunities through artist talks, demonstrations, classes and special workshops
* Provide an extended meeting-place for artists and performers to share information, collaborate on new work and build greater community
* Give artists and the general public access to state-of-the-art, practical information and new ideas from experts in the mediums, fire and safety officials, and well-known artists
* Promote arts education, fire safety and encourage positive, creative expression among youth groups with a special youth field trip day, art demonstrations and art facility tours
* Promote the safe use of fire and share best practices
* Bring members of the City, the Fire Department and fire artists together to encourage dialogue and work towards establishing best practice safety standards.
